Canadian Climate Leadership

Image

There have been so many post-election articles here in Canada about the new political landscape for the minority government Liberals. They same similar things about the message of the Canadian electorate about addressing climate change. The Conservatives lost an election which was theirs to win because they had no definable climate plan. The majority of Canadians voted for parties which made noises about addressing the climate emergency.

I've made no secret of my choice not to vote Liberal, despite a good local MP, because of the government's bizarre, rah-rah talk about addressing climate while making baffling choices around oil pipelines. Even the good decision to impose a carbon tax is half-hearted.

I voted Green out of my Christian conscience, and I know others voted NDP. Of course, there was a resurgence of the Bloq Quebecois in Quebec, a province which has embraced a "cap and trade" regime more than a decade ago and has a Green Fund into which their carbon taxes are paid.

The current federal government will need the support of these other parties to stay in power, and I hope and pray that the Libs can figure out how to be bold and progressive in its climate change mitigation policies. It has no time to waste.
