The Farmers vs the School Board
David McCann
Three generations of the McCann's work on the farm which has been in the family for two hundred years. They've been offered a ton of money by developers, but they didn't care. David McCann says that it isn't about money, it's about agriculture and family: "At the end of the day, what's money? It's all about your family, right?"That's not just idle talk. He would be a millionaire if he sold even a portion of the two hundred acre farm.
Now the Halton Catholic School Board wants to expropriate seventeen acres of the farm to build a school and the family is resisting. They figure that developers should be responsible for providing land for schools, not the people who have been feeding us for generations. I would have to agree.
The bible is an agricultural book from start to finish. Mess with the Creator? Start tilling the ground Adam and Eve. There are countless passages in the Hebrew scripture about planting and reaping, both metaphorical and literal. Need imagery for a parable? Talk about sowing seeds.
The land is essential to our earthly existence and vital to our Judeo-Christian faith. There is a certain irony to a Christian school board "paving paradise and putting up a parking lot" (thank you Joni.) You can't eat asphalt.
I hope that the McCann's win this one, God being their helper.
